Do compasses work in space? - Big Think +

Image credit - Pixabay How do you find your direction in space that doesn't involve a magnetic field, out between the galaxies where really there's no detectable magnetic field at all? Everything is moving. There's nothing to say this point is still and this is the reference point we're gonna use and everything moves according to that point. We're moving around the sun at about 66,000 miles an hour right now. The sun is moving around the galaxy, around the core of the galaxy, at about half a million miles an hour. We are actually falling gravitationally into the center of a cluster of galaxies at about a million and a half miles an hour. And that's just when we say relative to what? Relative to the sun. Relative to this group of galaxies. There is no absolute standard of reference in the universe. Let's talk first about compasses, and then maybe talk a bit more about the idea of how we locate ourselves in space in general. A compass is something that respond...

NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter Captures a Mars Rock Feature in 3D

This 3D view of a rock mound called “Faillefeu” was created from data collected by NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter during its 13th flight at Mars on Sept. 4, 2021. Image © NASA/JPL-Caltech NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter provided a 3D view of a rock-covered mound during its 13th flight on Sept. 4. The plan for this reconnaissance mission into the “South Seítah” region of Mars’ Jezero Crater was to capture images of this geologic target – nicknamed “Faillefeu” (after a medieval abbey in the French Alps) by the agency’s Perseverance rover team – and to obtain the color pictures from a lower altitude than ever before: 26 feet (8 meters). About 33 feet (10 meters) wide, the mound is visible just north of the center of the image, with some large rocks casting shadows. Stretching across the top of the image is a portion of “Artuby,” a ridgeline more than half a mile (900 meters) wide. At the bottom of the image, and running vertically up into the middle, are a few of the many sand ripp...

Using Ultraviolet Light to Suppress Electrostatic Noise in Gravitational Wave Observatories - NASA

Image © NASA Gravitational waves are minute ripples in space-time caused by the most energetic events in the universe—like the collision of two supermassive black holes. To detect gravitational waves, we will measure the tiny variations in the motion of purely free-falling test masses housed in three Sun-orbiting spacecraft. The CMD is vital for ensuring that electrostatic charge buildup on the test masses does not disturb their motion and obscure the gravitational wave signal. Gravitational waves enable an entirely new way of observing our universe and therefore provide enormous potential for scientific discovery. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), a European Space Agency mission with a significant contribution from NASA, will be the first mission to detect and observe low-frequ...

Dyson sphere might be used to harvest energy from black holes by Aliens

Image credit - Unsplash Technology-savvy aliens could be powering their society using a hypothetical megastructure called a Dyson sphere to harvest energy from a black hole. And the sphere might radiate in peculiar ways, allowing telescopes on Earth to discover the existence of intelligent beings elsewhere in the universe, a new study suggests. A Dyson sphere is a speculative structure that would encircle a star with a tight formation of orbiting platforms in order to capture starlight and produce power. First proposed by theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson in 1960, the idea might be realized by a spacefaring extraterrestrial species who had spread out across their star system and therefore required ever-increasing amounts of energy. Dyson's answer is the Dyson sphere, or "a hollow ball built around the sun would solve the space and energy problems," according to his paper. Therefore, it's a theoretical device that sits around an entire star and harvests its energy. I...

NASA’s Perseverance Rover Successfully Cores Its First Rock

The drill hole from Perseverance’s second sample-collection attempt can be seen, in this composite of two images taken on Sept. 1, by one of the rover’s navigation cameras. Image © NASA NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover has finally successfully scored its first Martian rock. The rover had failed in the first attempt it made on August 5. Data received by NASA on Wednesday, September 1, showed that the sample was present in the collection tube after coring. However, according to NASA, the images taken after the rover’s robotic arm finished the process, were inconclusive because of the poor sunlight.  Perseverance’s Sampling and Caching System uses a rotary-percussive drill and a hollow coring bit at the end of its 7-foot-long (2-meter-long) robotic arm to extract samples slightly thicker than a pencil. Within the bit during coring is a sample tube. After completing yesterday’s coring, Perseverance maneuvered the corer, bit, and open end of the sample tube in order to be imaged by the ro...

Alien could be discovered on this new class of 'Hycean' exoplanet.

In the discovery for Alien life, astronomers have mostly looked for planets of a similar size, mass, temperature, and atmospheric composition to Earth. Recently, the team of astronomers find a class of planets that may prove the existence of Alien Life. Such exoplanets are more numerous in planetary surveys than rocky ones, which means they could be fertile territory in the search for alien life. The researchers have dubbed them 'Hycean' worlds.  In the new study, researchers identify one such class of alien worlds "Hycean" planets, which are up to 2.5 times larger than Earth and feature huge oceans of liquid water beneath hydrogen-rich atmospheres. Hycean planets appear to be incredibly abundant throughout the Milky Way galaxy, and they could host microbial life similar to the "extremophiles" that thrive in some of Earth's harshest environments, study team members said. "Hycean planets open a whole new avenue in our search for life elsewhere,...

What will happen if Sun die ?

In science sometime there is all about fiction. Now a days, people get interested by watching Sci-Fi movies or series. Among them today my Science fiction topic is "What will happen if Sun dies ?". As we all know Sun is the important part of our whole solar system. Imagining the life without solar system will be terrible. It is also a big star we all know. Also by the mass of composition Sun contain 75% Hydrogen and 25% of Helium. others metal composed 0.1% of Sun. The temperature of the Sun 10,340 Degree Fahrenheit. There is a theory that if Sun exhaust all of his hydrogen there will be giant glowing ring of dust and gas. Its orbit can expand beyond Venus. The of this object will be Nebula ( Interstellar cloud of hydrogen, helium and other ionized gas ). According to study it will be alive for 10K years to 20K years. After it disappear it will disperse the raw material which will provide star and other cosmic things. This whole research are based on Computer models. ...

What is Fabric of Spacetime ?

Spacetime, it is mathematical model which fuses the three dimension of space and one dimension of time. Classical mechanics treats time as universal quantity which is uniform throughout the space. Everything with this spacetime move along the path which is defined as curvature. Gravity is a first fundamental force but now also it is least understood. After the Theory of Special Relativity, it become easy to understood space and time are same entity. The presence of mass and energy curve space time and make it fabric. Therefore another object travelling through this fabric get bent dye to the gravitational source. This is the cause which explain expanding of universe or called stretching of spacetime. But still the knowledge is incomplete because our less knowledge in Quantum Physics. When large masses move suddenly, some of this space-time curvature ripples outward, spreading in much the way as ripples on the surface of an agitated pond. When two dense objects such as neut...

Drake Equation that may can change our life

As we know how many equation has change the physics. There is so many famous equation e.g. E=mc2. Among them there are equation which is not famous but are amazing. So in this post I am going to written about a equation known as Drake Equation. The equation was written by Frank Drake and named after him. this equation probabilistic argument used to estimate the number of active communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in The Milky Way Galaxy. The equation summarizes the main concepts which scientist must contemplate when arguing to find other radio-communicative life. The Drake Equation is given in the image below.  Our scientists have discovered so many  exoplanet.  We still don't know how long our universe is, so there is a probability that there will be other civilization. this may have the possibility to do so. The astronomy professor Harlow Shapley speculate that there can be 10 million million million sun in universe. The Drake Equation amounts to a summa...

ISRO is planning for Chandrayan 3

Hello friends welcome to my blog. In this post I have written about ISRO 2020 plans. After 90 percent success of Chandrayan 2 ISRO is planning for Chandrayan 3 for the soft landing on moon. In there first they are not able to land softly on moon. Chandrayan 3 is lunar mission concept by ISRO and Japan Space Agency JAXA. According to information JAXA will provide H3 launch and rover but the lander will be responsible by ISRO.  Scientists are saying that the top priority of the mission is to strengthening the leg of the lander. The lander payload capacity would be about 500kg. There will be more focus on the rover and lander. Still there is no official announcement about the mission.

What is Exoplanetology?

Hello, In this post I have talk about Exoplanetology which is a part of Astrology. Exoplanetology is the study of  planet beyond our solar system. Perhaps the greatest challenge for exoplanetology is simply finding such planets. Planets are so small and dim compared to their parent stars, that spotting them against the backdrop of the star is extremely difficult. Confirmed discoveries of exoplanets have only been made since 1988, though the Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno proposed their existence in the sixteenth century. Observatories on Earth and in space have since found thousands of candidates for planets around other stars and new discoveries are being made on a daily basis. Scientists working in this field use an interdisciplinary approach to their research: astronomy and astrophysics are particularly important for detection and observation; astrogeology and astrobiology. Exoplanetology is a young science and there are plenty of Things We Don’t Know.  Learn...

Big Bang Is True Or Not...?

Hello friends, In this we will talk about Big Bang. It was famous theory. The Big Bang theory was given by George Lemaitre. Big Bang Theory is a cosmological model for the observable universe. The model explain us the beginning of the universe. There is two theory on the universe i.e. Big Bang and The steady state theory but Big Bang has strong evidence that the reason it is accepted universal. Singularity is the dense point, small point from where the universe began. Observation of Scientists Science realized that the galaxy is going away from each other. Later suggestion say that the universe is expanding and if it is than light will also streched. The fact is that those faraway galaxies are redshifted, meaning their light wavelengths have stretched out and headed for the red, lower-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum. But that also means that everything had even higher energy in the past, which means one thing: The beginning of the universe was incredibly hot. As in, ...

US Moon landing learned by Silent India Lander

Image Source- gstatic.com As India attempt a daring Moon landing last week but the lander was crash. NASA and many others US company watch and learn many things from ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) for their further moon mission. India's Chandrayaan 2 was an ambitious three part mission,  with an orbiter settled into circling the moon and a lander and rover that were meant to make a soft touchdown on Sept. 6. But late in the landing process, the the contact with Vikram lander  was lost, and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is running out of time to reconnect with the robot. If it cannot, the incident will mark the second lunar lander lost this year, joining Israel's Beresheet mission. For the U.S., which hasn't attempted to land on the moon since the Apollo program but wants to again soon, it's a stark reminder of the difficulty of spaceflight.  Currently, two U.S. companies are taking part in the first round of CLPS( Commercial Lunar P...

Gravitational waves detected for first time from newly born black hole:

Researchers have, for the first time, detected the gravitational waves from a newly born black hole, and found that the ringing pattern of the waves predicts the cosmic body’s mass and spin, providing more evidence for Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. The study, published in the journal Physical Review Letters, increases the possibility that black holes exhibit only three observable properties – mass, spin, and electric charge. All other properties, the study noted, could be swallowed up by the black hole itself, and are unobservable. Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity predicted that a black hole of a given mass and spin can only produce tones of a certain pitch and decay. The team consisting of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the U.S., calculated the mass and spin that the black hole should have using physicist Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, given its ringing pattern. These calculations, according to t...

NASA helping ISRO to communicate with Vikram lander

NASA helping ISRO to establish contact with Vikram Lander. Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is sending radio waves to Chandrayaan 2. By this ISRO get help in their mission. According to the report, ISRO is trying to establish the link with the lander with its Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu near Bengaluru. As days pass, the hope of lander Vikram's revival also diminishes because of the 14-day period. Fourteen days or one lunar day is all that the lander has to do its job as that's the only period it will be exposed to the Sun's rays. Thereafter, the solar panels will not be able to energise and it will be too cold for lander Vikram to operate. The US space agency’s DSN operator Richard Stephenson also confirmed on Twitter that the network is helping secure a communication link with the lander.

All about Starlink (Satellite Constellation)

In this post I will tell you about Starlink. It is a sattelite constellation project which is in development by company SpaceX. There aim was to develop low cost and high performance sattelite bus. The expense on this project is nearly 10 Billion US dollar. SpaceX launched their first 60 satellites of constellation in May 2019 into 450 km orbit. They expect to launch 720 sattelites upto coming year 2020. They are trying to make broadband internet connectivity to determine area of the planet. They will be utilizing up to 10000 GHz frequency. Starlink sattelite use Hall - Effect Thrusters with krypton gas as the reaction mass. It helps in orbit raising and altitude controls. The 60 starlink v0. 9 satellites those are launched in may 201 have following characteristics. 1. It have single solar array and flat panel design with multiple high through put antennas. 2. How space suit are made?

Space suit made by SpaceX Hello visitors, In this post we will talk about Space Suit. Everyone has curiosity that how space suit are made. Space suit are build with complexity. The manufacturer have to decide what material are suitable for survive in space. The suits are also known as EMU ( Extravehicular Mobility Unit ) .The suit have 14 layers. There is three innermost layer which help the astronaut to cool. Above this layer there is bladder layer which is essential for survival of astronaut. The next layer is known as Ripsot layer. This layer is used defend any directly dangerous exposure in space. After this there is seven Mylar Insulation. This work like thermostat device to stabilize temperature. The last layer have three layers. One layer is used as Bullet proof vest. The next two are waterproof and fire proof.   Astronaut has life risk therefore there are many security system in their suit. There suit is made according to space environment. They use liquid o...
